| Does a FORTH, commercial or free, exist for the Cell processor used in Sony's PlayStation 3 game console? I have been unable to locate anything significant - "forth" is not the best keyword. We have installed Linux on one PS3 and the IBM SDK allows programs written in C to run in parallel on most of the 8 SPUs. Each SPU has "only" 256 KB for program and data. So FORTH's compactness should be a good fit. A feasibilty project would be to make predictions for lunar occultations with a FORTH program running in parallel on all available SPUs, e.g. for simplicity 1 day or 1 month worth of predictions for each SPU at a time. Perhaps even with a web-interface for use by the public. Cell processor: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_microprocessor> Regards, Peter Mortensen Software Engineer, M.Sc.E.E. Adding the extensions to use that math crunchers might no be that hard. Mops (Mike's own programming system) is free and comes with source for compiling in a G4/G5 Macintosh. Mops uses the Yerk/Neon OO model and is very cool. Mike doesn't really support it anymore since he has no desire to rework it for the Intel Core2. I would not be surprised if Apple brings out a server or desktop with a fist full of Cell processors. The company is full of G5 types and they just bought a Fab that used to make G5 processors. I asked a rather high up friend about it and he uncharacteristically hemmed and hawed and didn't answer. Play stations are probably the cheapest source. Three in each aren't there? And they network with other PS3's? How much does IBM charge for their Cell Blade? -- Charlie Springer |
