The one I use is fink http://www.finkproject.org/ It currently has gcc 4.3.x, but not 4.4.x. This delay in incorporating new releases is typical of package managers. They simplify keeping everything consistent and synced together, but you sometimes don't have access to the very latest development versions. BTW, Xcode 3.1 from Apple includes several versions of gcc, including (I think) 4.0, 4.1, 4.2, and 4.3 (although ppc and intel may have different versions). However, none of them include gfortran. Anyone know why they go to extra effort to disable something as useful as gfortran? Is there any way to sign a petition or something to get them to stop shooting themselves (and us) in the foot? I could understand why they might have done this a couple of years ago, but now gfortran is fairly robust. $.02 -Ron Shepard |

The package manager doesn't seem to use the version numbers others talk about. Steve Kargl posted source that used /dev/random/ as a seed for a PRNG. I was unable to replicate. dev/random/ exists on ubuntu, but I can't get gfortran to build an executable that executes. Oh well. -- We are here and it is now.
