[WinXP] Slow GIMP startup

  1. Default [WinXP] Slow GIMP startup

    Hello!

When starting Gimp (Windows XP, 2.2.8) the progress bar in the "Gimp
Startup" dialog jumps within 1 second to 50%, remains there for about 35
seconds (!!) and then goes to 100% in about 2 seconds time.

    The dialog displays:
    Looking for data files
    Fonts

This is displayed for 35 seconds!! After that, plugins and extensions
are initialised (that takes only a very short time, just enough so that
I can read what is done).

Can someone tell me what the Gimp does when initialising fonts? My
    Windows/Fonts directory contains 240 files. I don't think that is a lot.
Is there a possibility to find out why the startup process takes so long
    at that point?

    Thanks in advance,
    Wolf

    Hey Wolf:

This used to happen to me too. Some kind-soul told me that there in the
c:\documents and settings\user-name\ directory, there will be a
..fonts-cache1 file. Delete that cache and re-start GIMP. First time it
takes a while to make that fonts-cache again, but from 2nd time it
    should be pretty normal.

    Hope that helped,
    Best regards,
    Animesh

    Thanks a lot, that's it!

My d:/home/.fonts-cache1 file was 0 bytes, after deleting it the size
now is 330kB and Gimp only needs 5 seconds in total for startup.

Maybe there should be a test if there is a zero-sized .fonts-cache1 file
and if so, it should be unlinked automatically. Anyway, why doesn't Gimp
put this file into the $HOME/.gimp-2.2 directory?

Good it worked for you. And I have no clue for your other queries :-).
Development GIMP is out of my knowledge-scope.

Because it is not written by GIMP. This file is manged by fontconfig.
