recommend distro / newest Gimp / gimp-perl support ? : Graphics
This is a discussion on recommend distro / newest Gimp / gimp-perl support ? within the Graphics forums in Theory and Concepts category; + I foolishly has asked several days ago, if anyone was using gimp-perl with opensuse... but it seems that distribution has rather deliberately excluded any and all support files for this branch of Gimp... so... I will now ask: ...could anyone suggest a newer Linux distribution known to include Gimp 2.3+ /and/ directly support gimp-perl functioning as well ? (this is to say... all gimp files already on a CD set). Debian, I know, always includes these, but I'm presently after a smaller distro... maybe Im asking for the impossible ? Gimp-perl may be considered "additional ware", being included only ...

Gimp-perl may be considered "additional ware", being included only on larger distros... though I will say, SuSE-Pro always supported it, with 4 or 5 disks (this was before the opensuse nonsense happened). Really, what might be nice for situations like this is a big downloadable gimp package with basically all the necessary support files... never have seen such a thing, so I wont ask where to get it :-) distro suggestions anyone ? Thanks for reading ! |

Hm, as you are using (Open)SUSE... I've seen several examples of people running up-to-date software on SUSE by using third-party apt4rpm repositories (IIRC there are a few bigger ones which are known to have high-quality packages). Another possibility would be to choose a distro which does make it easy to build the latest GIMP - either development releases or from SVN (I'd recommend the latter - if you can do it, why bother with outdated stuff?). Ubuntu Feisty should do it, maybe even Edgy (not sure about the Glib version). And, of course, Debian Sid, the GIMP developer's platform of choice. Debian does also ship libgimp-perl. HTH, Michael |
