Building a new PC for Max

  1. Default Building a new PC for Max

I plan on getting a new PC to run 3DS Max. All I plan to do with it is get
enough practice that I can get good at it and create some good images and
videos that I can show a potential employer so that I can get an entry level
job at a game company. Is there any current PC hardware out there that is
incompatible with Max, or would be buggy with it? I've thought of building
the following system to run it:

    Shuttle XPC SN25P nForce 4
    Athlon 64 3000
    PCI-e Geforce 6600 GT 128 MB
    WinXP Home
    DDR400 512 MB
    17 inch 1280x1024 LCD
    IDE HD 120 GB
    IDE DVD-ROM/CD-RW

How well would this system run Max? How much better would it run with 1 GB?
Would a DVD burner be best for sending portfolios to employers? And when
and how does it use the graphics card? During modeling/animating? During
    rendering? Or not at all?

  2. Default Re: Building a new PC for Max

Here are a couple answers to your questions:

    1) More memory is ALWAYS better. Go for the 1 GB.
    2) Companies, like Pixar, definetly want demo reels on DVD. Getting a
DVD-RAM drive is in your interest.
    3) Max uses the 3d card when displaying the scene in the viewports. When
rendering, it uses the CPU (and bucketloads of memeory).

    Just a suggestion.

I'm getting ready to buy a new computer in the next couple of
months - and have been looking at several from a company called
    BoxxTech ( www.boxxtech.com ).

They build stuff aimed at commercial graphics use - you might
look over the specs for some of their machines and see what they
    are using.

I would suggest getting a SATA harddrive instead of IDE, the 10000rpm ones
from Western Digital, makes a huge difference here if you have a lot of
resources to pull in for a scene and also really helps with any video
    editing you may do later.

That BOXX is awesome, but where can you get prices? I'm thinking on getting
one for my company, but I'm from Croatia so I'm not sure if they deliver
    here.
    Thanks

Yeah, I understand - took me awhile to find their price list.

    http://www.boxxtech.com/products/workstations.asp

The one I'm looking at (5100 series) is about $4k USD with all
    the bells and whistles.

    http://www.boxxtech.com/products/cf_...InstanceID=524
[just the worksheet - not the system configuration I've picked
    out in my dreams]

I think they ship internationally. They spotlight a well known
cgi guy named Steven Stahlberg as being one of their customers -
who is out of Hong Kong (I think). So I'm guessing he had his
    rig shipped.

[warning - graphical cgi nudity - don't say I didn't warn you if
that's not acceptable to your tastes]

Thanks, I see it. Actually the price is good. Only I wouldn't need Quadros,
I mean seriously what are the uses of it? My GeForce 6800 Ultra can handle
everything, so what would I gain with Quadro? Except high price. Could I put
a normal AGP 8x card on that MB?

    thanks

If you're looking at the 5100 I posted a link to - at the bottom
of the page it gives some systems specs. Under "Expansion
options:" it lists, 1) AGP 8X - so I'm going to guess that you
could. On top of that - isn't the NVIDIA Quadro FX 500 a AGP 8x
card too? I'd imagine that since they give you a list of parts
to choose from - that it might be possible to get a system
without a video card so that you could use your existing one.
Me, I need everything new - my current system is a bit over 5
years old - well, the video card is a bit newer than than as I
put in a ATI All-in-Wonder (but it's still one of the old
    7200s).

You might email one of their sales rep guys - I did and asked
him some questions. It took them a couple days to get back to me
    though.

Oh, ok. So how come you chose them? Are they like leaders in the area? I
mean maybe there's some more expanded company, like Dell, or HP that would
make something like that, we have their stores here. What do you think? Or
    would you stick with Boxx?

  10. Default Re: Building a new PC for Max

Right now I'm using a Dell computer - one which I bought from
their Austin factory outlet store about five years ago (they've
since closed that store). So I've got nothing against using a
Dell. HP? don't know - never used one of theirs myself. However,
I bought one of their cheap ($600) systems sold here at the
local Wal-mart a couple years ago for a christmas present for my
brother's family and I think they are still using it.

Why am I considering getting one of these Boxx Tech over a Dell?
I guess just to try something new - I haven't checked, but I
wouldn't be surprised if their prices were comparable (for
systems with the similar parts). I guess I'm also imagining that
the people at Boxx Tech might be a bit more knowledgeable at
what would make for a better graphics workstation. Sort of like
all the people who think that Alienware knows how to build game
    machines.

If I get either the Dell or the Boxx Tech - I'm supporting a
    local Austin based company.
