I doubt if you are 'using Photoshop (only) for a while' that you are
using as much as '1% of its possibilities'. Reason for doubting it as
because I doubt if any of the "'know how's" are using as much as 40%
on a regular basis. I even doubt whether anyone really knows the
program from A to Z. Designers and diggers keep on finding new uses
for existing facilities:-)

You can save each layer in a separate image as easy as 'save as'.
This is how images for tutorials are saved. Simply selecting the layer
in the status you want to save it, and go 'File/Save As' and pick your
choice.

Dave, you evince being one of the uninformed with your response below.

That is the hard way. Do it in one step as follows

FILE - SCRIPTS - EXPORT LAYERS TO FILES

enjoy

For a moment, when I first saw the subject line, I thought that it said:

'Saving Lawyers'

And I thought: 'Why would anyone want to do that?' :-)

Oh shit, another newbie, but not admitting it like the OP did.
I'd love to see you do what you said in one step (or even in less
steps than my directions).

Follow the path: FILE - SCRIPTS - EXPORT LAYERS TO FILES

It is self-evident. It must suck to be you.

As several people have pointed out, File->Scripts->Export Layers To
Files is a fast convenient way to do exactly what you want to do,
assuming by "save each layer in a seperate image" you mean separate
image file...
