I am about to buy a laptop and was wondering if I should be concerned with
the fact that a centrino is only 1.5 as opposed to the P4 I could buy (2.8).
I am going to do music on my laptop and I need a fast computer but I do not
really know if that matters so much..

don't be fooled by the numbers.....the Centrino 1.5 will at least match
the P4 in terms of performance, and your battery will last
    wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy longer.

Centrinos do run faster than a P4 rated at the same speed. I've seen it
written that a 1.4 GHz Centrino is about equivalent to a 2.4 GHz P4; but
likely such estimates are application dependent.

The other plusses are power consumption (longer battery life -- or
smaller, lighter batteries) and a resulting lack of heat: My 1.4 GHz
Centrino runs very cool (the only warm spot on the underside is where
the memory resides) and the fan is inaudible (thought it was not working
until I felt for air flow). That could equate to longer life, too.

It also makes my 1.6 GHz P4 look like a snail!

Not sure what you mean by "do music". But the most stressful app is to
    "do video", I think.

Centrino is a chipset that includes the Pentium M processor and Intel
branded integrated wireless. You can get the Pentium M processore in
laptops that do not include the Intel wireless (uses 3rd party).

If you can hold out a few more months, there will be a new Pentium M
out - the current crop is built on .13 micron process, the new crop
will be .09 micron and will use even less power (less heat, more
    battery duration).

Tom's Hardware review the new Dothan (Pentium M II). Seems performance is
higher for apps, same for games and in the end, the same wrt battery life.
    See here http://www.tomshardware.com/mobile/2...dothan-17.html for
    more.

Wrt Myrtenbaum's original email: If very good battery-life and *near*
desktop performance are what you're looking for, the Pentium M is the way
to go. The intro of the Dothan gives *some* advantages but, the
price/performance of the original 'M' just took a leap. Make sure you look
at laptops that carry the Pentium M alone as well as the Centrino package
(cpu + graphics + wirless 802.11b). You can find similar battery life,
802.11g and superior graphics on some systems w/just the 'M' cpu.

No need to wait months, the new IBM Thinkpad T42s were announced today and
    contain the Dothan CPU.

<senior moment> Oh yeah, this _is_ the second quarter of the year!
    Time sure flies! </senior moment>

I'll be waiting until the kids are out of college (and out of the home
    - not always the same thing) in about 18 years before I get anything
    shiny and new :-)

    M;

"Centrino" (the 3-chip collection from intel that includes the pentium m,
the 802.11b and the video chipset) may have specifications that rule where
the antennae is placed...Although I doubt it. They do offer reference
    designs however. Check out
    http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/news/article.php/1598801 as an example.

I know that some manufacturers (Sony and non-intel customer Apple) have
placed the 802.11b antennae within the lcd casing border.

In Thinkpads they're in the display surround, i.e. the "lid".

This location appears to give the best reception.
