IBM760EL questions
I have an IBM760 EL. It's a very nice laptop but I feel it's come to the
point when I must consider what to do with it...
I paid £200 for it, in 2001 then replaced Win98SE with Win NT4. That meant I
had to spend £30 to buy an extra 32Mb of RAM for it.
In 2003, the charger died and I had to spend £50 on a new charger. Shortly
after, the left mouse paddle became a little less responsive than the right
mouse paddle, meaning it had to be held down for a fraction of a second
longer than I'm accustomed to.
I know the battery is fairly weak. The screen doesn't flicker and the
circuit board and floppy drive all work fine.
The caddy seems to have gone haywire - the drive works in my USB PC caddy
but the laptop won't recognise it.
I checked on the price of a caddy and was quoted £35 plus £12.50 carriage
plus VAT, which at a rough guess would come to £50.
This leaves me wondering: I've spent £280 already on a 7-year-old laptop and
am faced with a further £50 for a caddy and possibly extra later for a
battery/keyboard.
What would it be best doing? Tossing the thing in the dustbin or going for
the parts?

Dustbin (hold onto it on the odd chance that something comes up
cheap).
A 760EL runs a Pentium 100~133MHz, LCD of 11~12.1 inches. For £50
(about $90 US) you can find a whole, working Thinkpad 560x or if
you're really luck, a 560z. The 560x is Pentium 200-233, 12.1 screen,
and the 560z is Pentium II, 233~300MHz.
I've recently acquired a nice Compaq Armada 7400, Pentium II 300MHz,
13.3" 1024x768 LCD, for $25 (no battery, AC adapter, HD, or caddy)
Found and ordered an AC adapter, and battery for $80 US. (All prices
include shipping)
I'll be adding (as money and cheap parts come available): 4-6gb HD
($20-$30). HD caddy ($20 if the caddy from my IBM 390 works - it fits
but I haven't received the AC adapter yet), CD-RW/DVD ($40-$50).

Hmm. I charged my 760EL battery today then an hour later, tried powering on.
Dead. Put the charger in and pulled the battery out - started up.
Looks like the battery's dead.
Checked the drive and reformatted to FAT32 in my USB caddy. I put Win 95 on
the caddy, ready to install. I'll have a crack at that later.
Looks as though that laptop's failing a bit at a time. Charger, now battery.
Possibly caddy too.
One thing is certain - after my experiences of 2nd hand laptops, I'm never
going to touch another!
