Difference between AMD X2 & X3 on an AM2 based motherboard?

This is a discussion on Difference between AMD X2 & X3 on an AM2 based motherboard? within the Hardware forums in Theory and Concepts category; I have a question... My system uses an AM2 socket on a Gigabyte GA-M59SLI-S5 (rev. 1.0) motherboard. It presently houses an Athlon 64 X2 6000+ dual core CPU (2x 3GHz cores). I learned that this AM2 motherboard also supports the X3 8x00 series tri-core processors @ 2.3 GHz per core. Assumption --> Using an AM2 socket and not an AM2+ socket. Question --> Am I right to assume that my dual-core 6000+ CPU running each core at 3 GHz will have a higher performance than a tri-core running @ 2.3 GHz per core when installed in this AM2 socket? ______________________ ...
