Is there any direct way for transfering data between a Laptop and a Desktop
without using a disc?

depends on your laptop/pc.
1. Sharing with ethernet crosscable
2. Sharing with null modem rs232.
3. laplink cable between printerports.
4. sharing with Wifi netwotk.
5. ...

USB key, external hard drive.

Also, if you network the computers, share a folder or use SyncToy to
manage your data, that works great.
