Default Baffling Hard Disk Issues

I have a 250 gb that was my main drive in my main machine. It started
running poorly and I prepared to junk the drive and start fresh with a new
drive array (SATA RAID setup). All efforts to copy data from the disk failed,
and now I have the machine running on a fresh install of XP Home SP2. I have
the old drive in an external enclosure, and all efforts to get data from it
have failed. It reports itself as fat12 and 10 mb in size to all recovery
software I have tried, and appears in Win Management console as a 232 gb
drive (normal).

What next? All I really wont off the drive are .docs and maybe a few photos..
