Suspect Battery

This is a discussion on Suspect Battery within the Hardware forums in Theory and Concepts category; Acer Aspire 3000 Windows XP Works well on mains lead when no battery present. Freezes and becomes unworkable immediately the battery is fitted. Is this typical bad battery behaviour? Would like some reassurance before lashing out on new battery. Thanks, W...

Acer Aspire 3000 Windows XP

Works well on mains lead when no battery present.

Freezes and becomes unworkable immediately the battery is fitted.

A friend of mine has an Aspire 3000 that would act like that. I booted
it in safe mode and it worked fine. It turned out that if I took the
battery out it would work normally. My friend told me that the battery
was only holding a charge for five to ten minutes before he started
having trouble with it.

By coincidence he just installed some Windows Updates and the battery
flaked out when he rebooted. He thought that an update had screwed up
his laptop.

Yep,
sounds exactly the same and now the owner (my wife) informs me that
its capacity had been geatly reduced lately. She suspected I was
responsible for the freezing snag because it happened immediately after
I had installed some print server software on it.
