How to restore Outlook express IMAP files
Hello,
My outlook express in XP had been configured to read IMAP emails.
Have many subfolders - and copies of IMAP emails IS in my machine.
Now XP went under and I have new XP installed but Unable to restore the
look and the feel of my old IMAP in my new outlook express.
Issue two:
I also had parallel mozill Imap mail on the same machine - in other
word I can read the same message(s) BOTH in outlook express and
Mozilla 1.x email on the same old machine.
What is the best way to restore thsi same look and feel of my old IMAP
folders.
Not many writeup on the subject out there.
Thanks

Your first step is to find a psychic with a magical mind ray-beam machine,
that can extract the details of how your "old IMAP folders" "looked", since
you have not bothered to explain exactly how you had Outlook Express
looking before, how it looks now, and what the difference is.

Re: How to restore Outlook express IMAP files
Hello,
for outlook express I had a single POP3 acount with 500msgs in the
inbox more or less.
The IMAP part of it has some 20 folder with 1 GB worth of data.
The new outlookexpress can only - reapeat can only retireive the POP3
part of my old inbox. and the IMAP reamins not - imported.
The IMAP folders are seend as files - i.e . Data1 - data 2..etc.
How can I can port the data 1, data 2 files back to the new
outlookexpress.
This is a very challageing and not straight forward process it seems
-- not even paid technican was able to figure it out.
Hope that helps.
Thanks

This looks like a rather obscure Outlook-Express-specific configuration
issue.
I think you'll have a much better chance of figuring this out if you ask
this question in the appropriate microsoft.* group.
A very simple Google search reveals the existing of a Usenet group called
"microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress", which looks like
a much likelier place to find someone who can figure this out. When you
post your question, be sure to explicitly identify your version of Outlook
Express, Internet Explorer, which service pack you're on, etc.
Good luck.

Did you realise that the IMAP account on your old Outlook Express setup was connected to
an IMAP server somewhere? The original messages live on the server, not on your PC.
One approach:
You need to have or obtain the address of that server.
Then, in Outlook Express:
1. you create a new account and specify that it gets mail from the IMAP server.
2. right click on the account name and choose "IMAP folders"
3. in the IMAP folders dialogue, do "reset list" and then select the folders you want to see
4. then exit from the IMAP folders dialogue and you should see your IMAP folders as before.
Another idea:
Outlook Express may have stored the content of your messages locally in files with the
extension ".dbx". You can find these files (which will be somewhere under "Documents and
Settings") using the Windows search.
If you have these .dbx files, the contents can be retrieved and reloaded into Outlook
Express, but it's not straightforward. One method is here:
http://experts.about.com/q/Microsoft...-E-mails-1.htm
Here is one of a number of utilities which claim to retrieve messages from .dbx files:

Hope this helps,
John

Re: How to restore Outlook express IMAP files
Furthermore, I can READ all messages on a non-connect client .i.e
outlookexpress and mozilla ( thunberbird ) the IMAP files are on my
machine and they were on my mail server.
How can I Force a new clients to read the old messages???

I've used it and one or two others to recover messages left orphaned in
locally stored DBX files.
