Anyone know much about SSL?

This is a discussion on Anyone know much about SSL? within the Inetserver forums in Microsoft Tools category; I currently host a webserver runing IIS5.5 with an SSL 56bit cert installed. I am thinking about upgrading to an SGC cert from thwate. As this can support up to 256bits, I am wondering if there will be any speed issues when accessing the site? Cheers! Alex...

the higher the encryption, the more cpu cycles it takes to encrypt/decrypt.
if you experience degradation, you may want to look into an ssl card

We just ordered a Thawte "123" SSL cert. Those are 128bit. I guess my
question is, why do you need 256? It's up to 256 which implies 128 if client
browsers are only capable of such.

Very happy with Thawte by the way. Feels good to get out from under the
high cost of Verisign. The price is right and the service is good so far.
