INETINFO.EXE hangs up - 100% CPU usage
I have Win XP Pro and I use IIS to to host websites that I am developing.
Under the "default website" (called JLL, the computer name) I have some
virtual directories called V1, V2 and V3.
So to point IE at a particular script I would type
HTTP://JLL/V1/something.htm or soem such.
This has been working fine since I installed XP several months ago
(previously I used Win98 SE with PWS for the same purpose).
All of a sudden today I found that IE seemed to just hang and I found
INETINFO.EXE taking up almost all the CPU. This happens all the time now.
I have shut down and restarted, even re-installed IIS. I can narrow it down
to this now.
I can start a very simple HTML script in IE with
HTTP://JLL/V1/simplescript.htm. But when I try to go to another URL, or even
refresh the first script I get the problem.
Can anyone please help??
Thanks

Re: INETINFO.EXE hangs up - 100% CPU usage
Hi,
This is problematic. How much effort do you want to put into troubleshooting
this? If you don't want to spend a lot of time, you might just want to
uninstall IIS, and install it again.
Cheers

Re: INETINFO.EXE hangs up - 100% CPU usage
Hi guys...
I thought I was the only one. It started happening to me
today 9th May 04. Was fine before. Exactly same problem.
Everytime I try to load "WEB"... inetinfo.exe goes crazy.
If anyone has a solution, please do email me.

Re: INETINFO.EXE hangs up - 100% CPU usage
I re-installed IIS, then XP to no avail. THEN I discovered that all the
critical XP patches (including some IIS I assume) had disappeared. So I
reinstalled them and bingo! my problem disappeared.
This suggests that there is some underlying XP/IIS problem that is fixed by
one of the many MS patches. But since all the patches have the same kind of
bland description it is impossible to know which does what.
But I am happy now.

Re: INETINFO.EXE hangs up - 100% CPU usage
Dear John,
Happy for you... but I don't think the problem is "really"
solved yet. My XP Pro is super patched up (all the
time)... and still does this.
I'd rather figure out what is wrong than to reinstall...
because I'll never know what the problem is and when the
it is going to hit me again.

Re: INETINFO.EXE hangs up - 100% CPU usage
You can use the IISState tool or IISDump tool to dump out the thread stack,
and produce a heap dump. You will then need someone who knows something
about debugging to tell you what's going on:
you can get IISState from here
http://www.iisfaq.com/default.aspx?view=P197
Cheers

Re: INETINFO.EXE hangs up - 100% CPU usage
Thanks Ken...
For whatever weird reason... no configurations changed...
no Firewall rules changed... nothing.
I downloaded IISState and ran it. Now the CPU load is
normal. *scratches head*
I don't know whether to feel happy that it has stopped or
whether to be worried that I don't know the true cause of
the problem.
Thanks anyway.
