    Since this is a plat form specific problem, you ask in the a
    Windows/C++ newsgroup how to do it. You solve it with a small C++
    program. then you come back here and ask about building some JNI glue
    to Java.

    Sorry, wrong answer. Shuffling him off to some other newsgroup with a
    rebuking reply implying that he should have gone there to begin with
    is not correct. This problem isn't ipso facto a native-code-requiring
    problem; without prior knowledge that it's not true, there's no reason
    not to think that either an AWT (or whatever) method group exists to
    query for factoids about the native windowing system's status, whose
    return behavior would obviously depend on the applicability of that in
    the particular environment encountered, or failing a standard library
    class for this sort of thing a third-party one that does it.
