    guessing windows?

    do you have the old drive's windows Registry?
    On a drive you can boot up from? Or can use a Registry tool to extract the
    info from a drive that doesn't boot? Or was the drive/computer just reverted
    and there is no chance of recovery?

    Better: Do you have the site definition information written down on old
    fashioned paper so that you can recover from this by typing it in again
    because it involves usernames and passwords.

    xp pro. i can use norton's recovery point browser to access files from
    the ghosted system, so i guess i need to know where the site definition
    info is normally stored?

    and i DO have passwords etc stored elsewhere - i'm just trying to avoid
    having to type them all in again.

    They are in the Registry.

    sorry to be such a dolt - using the recovery point browser and opening
    the ghosted backup, where exactly might i look? i DID find some folders
    (with the site names and inside each one was an .xml file) and .dws
    files (same name as the sites) from : docs and
    settings->administrator->app
    data->adobe->dreamweaver9->configuration->sitecache, so recovered them
    to the corresponding folders on the new setup, but opening DW doesn't
    show them in my site list. now i'm TOTALLY confused...

    They are in the Windows Registry. They are not in folders. Your only real
    option would be to restore the ghosted image, boot from it, export the
    registry keys, and then import them into your new boot.

    You mean the ones you copied onto the new computer? Probably the actual
    files that make up the various sites. It's only the site DEFINITIONS that
    are saved in the Registry.

    i JUST had a look at the folders - they all hold a 1kb file called
    dwSiteColumnsMe.xml. there were also files with the sitename and a .dws
    extension. they are all different sizes ranging from 30-20kb in size...

    those are the site cache file which dw maintains to speed up link checking,
    and the Files Panel column customization file that records what custom
    changes to the Files Panel view you've made.

    They are not the site definition information or the site's asset files.
