Can't Use Marquee Tool

This is a discussion on Can't Use Marquee Tool within the Macromedia Fireworks forums in Adobe Tools category; I used to use the Marquee tool to select an area, then either cut/paste or copy/paste that area. I just started using FireWorks CS3, and the Marquee tool doesn't work that way. I select an area, but then I can't cut or copy it and paste it where I want. Does it function in a different way in this new version (I was using FW 4 before)? I know this has to be a simple question, but the FW Help file isn't helping. Thanks in advance to all. jd...

Can you describe the steps you are using? Make sure you have the correct
image object selected in the layers panel.

The marquee tool is in the Bitmap tools section and only works on images, not
vectors. If you want a selection of a Fireworks document, you can use a slice
and export, or use the crop tool, copy, then remember to undo (or at least not
save).

Thanks for your responses.

This is simply a screenshot. I used to do this all of the time. Here are the
steps.

1. Select area using the Marquee tool.
2. Ctrl + C to copy the area.
3. Ctrl + V to paste the area.
4. Either drag the pasted area to the place that I want to edit, or use the
arrow key to move the pasted area.

Why doesn't it work in this version?

It should work fine. Mae sure the Pointer tool is selected when you try
to move the new object.

I have found sometimes, if FW has been running a long time, that the key
commands seem to be ignored. Try using the menus for copy and paste, or
restart FW and see if that helps.

Choose Edit > Copy (or Ctrl + C)
Choose Select > Deselect
Click on the Pointer Tool
Choose Edit > Paste (or Ctrl + V)

Using the Select > Deselect was the ticket. I never had to do that in my older version of FW, but it works now. Thanks a lot!!
