Tracking Log Interpretation

  1. Default Tracking Log Interpretation

We recently upgraded a 3rd party app that submits emails for delivery to
external recipients. The issue we are having is randomly some emails are
never delivered. In reviewing the tracking log this morning, for 2 emails
that were not delivered, the log showed something I didn't understand. Under
location, below my server name, was postini listed 3 times. I presumed that
meant three messages were submitted. The tracking then appears to show that
only 1 email was sent. Question - what is the significance of postini being
listed 3 times? Does this indicate a problem with the way the email was
    submitted to the exchange server?

If the recipient uses Postini services, your server is having trouble
connecting to the Postini server. You should see
    HELO
    RECPT TO
    DATA
    QUIT
    ....for each message.
Was there any other outbound mail having this problem? Any further clues in
the logs? Do you have your SMTP logging at maximum?

What is your third party app and what exactly does it do?

  3. Default Re: Tracking Log Interpretation

These 3 emails that were submitted to exchange for delivery were sent to a
distribution list which consisted of an internal public folder and 1
external recipient. Both the PF and the external recipient only received 1
out of the 3 messages. I presently have logging at medium. This 3rd party
was attempting to send 3 individual messages to our exchange server yet the
tracking seems to indicate the 3 messages were submitted as one message. Is
it possible that the 3rd party app is not properly ending the connection
after each submittal? All other email activities are fine.

Where is this third party app running? Is this internal to your network, or
not? If it's internal, I'm not sure why it would be hitting Postini at all.

If nothing else is causing this problem, I think you've isolated it to the
server/app in question here; you might check with their tech support.

The app is internal. Can you educate me on what the role of postini is when
it is showing in the tracking logs?

No idea; it shouldn't be. You aren't sending your outbound mail through
    Postini's servers, are you?
If all this application needs is access to your SMTP server to send mail,
just point it at your Exchange server's name/IP address, and make sure the
IP address of the server/box it's running on, is allowed to relay through
    your virtual SMTP server.

  7. Default Re: Tracking Log Interpretation

No I am not using postini at all and the 3rd party app is configured as you
stated. I changed the 3rd party app today to use a different mailer that is
available with it. It now will call outlook express when it sends an email.
Will see if this resolves the issue.
