We are running two Exchange 2000 servers, each on a
windows 2000 domain controller. The first exchange server
was placed on the forest root domain controller, (holding
all five operations master roles)then a second exchange
server was placed on the second domain controller. I know
this is not the ideal way to configure exchange, but we
have a shortage of physical servers.
The MX record in the external DNS server is configured to
have a priority of "0" . The first exchange server has had
no issues to date. However, when it was taken offline for
maintainence, the second exchange server cannot send or
receive mail. Neither server is configured as a
bridgehead server. It is configured to accept mail for the
entire subnet in the properties of the SMTP server. The MX
record on the domain's external DNS server was re-
configured to have a priority of zero (It's default
priority is 5). This has had no affect. The default
routing group setting was changed to master for this
backup server.
Any suggestions or insight?
