I get the same thing when I test that way. Is there a PIX firewall between
exchange and Internet? I can run the test from inside and it works fine

The banner your seeing is from a PIX Firewall with the SMTP Fixup protocol
enabled. This is blocking all but the basic SMTP verbs (commands) and will
not allow ESMTP functionality. It is recommended that you disable the SMTP
Fixup protocol on the PIX for any ESMTP Mail servers according to Cisco's
    website:

For more information, visit the following Cisco Web sites:

    http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/Suppor...p=Hardware:PIX

    http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/110/22.html

There is also reference to the above information in the following Microsoft
    Article:
320027 Cannot send or receive e-mail messages behind a Cisco PIX firewall
    http://kb/article.asp?id=Q320027

    Clifton
I looked up the q article you spoke of. Do you think with smtp fixup
protocol enabled on pix it is possible to turn exchange into a open relay?
    Since it strips authentication commands

Not unless you specifically configure the server to be an open relay. By
default, E2K and E2K3 have open relay possibility disabled. Just do the
fixup thing and move on. Cisco support will tell you the same thing. I think
the fixup is Cisco's equivalent of WindowsME
