I think we may. I have just viewed this message on my Mac running Mac OS X
10.5.2 using mutt-1.5.18, using both the standard Mac Terminal program and
the iTerm terminal emulator. I lack the nntp and compressed patches, but have
trouble imagining them as the cause.

Your capital umlauts and sz view just fine. I'll append my "mutt -v"
below for comparison.

Can you describe _how_ the glyphs are misrendered? I expect there's some
kind of locale or presumed charset issue. Do you have charset settings
in your mutt config?

Also, possibly there are relevant changes between 1.5.17 and 1.5.18,
though as I say your characters present correctly to me.
Have a skim of:
http://dev.mutt.org/hg/mutt/shortlog

| $ ./mutt -v
[...]
| +USE_POP +USE_NNTP +USE_IMAP +USE_SMTP -USE_GSS +USE_SSL_OPENSSL -USE_SSL_GNUTLS -USE_SASL +HAVE_GETADDRINFO

You have +HAVE_NNTP, I don't.

| -EXACT_ADDRESS -SUN_ATTACHMENT

I have +EXACT_ADDDRESS.

| +ENABLE_NLS -LOCALES_HACK +COMPRESSED +HAVE_WC_FUNCS +HAVE_LANGINFO_CODESET +HAVE_LANGINFO_YESEXPR

You have +COMPRESSED.

| PKGDATADIR="/usr/local/share/mutt"
| SYSCONFDIR="/usr/local/etc"

I have:
PKGDATADIR="/opt/mutt-1.5.18-leopard-x86/share/mutt"
SYSCONFDIR="/opt/mutt-1.5.18-leopard-x86/etc"

| patch-1.5.18.rr.compressed.1
| vvv.nntp

I don't have these. My full "mutt -v" is appended below.

I suspect locale/charset stuff.
I have:
set ascii_chars=no
#set assumed_charset="utf-8:iso-8859-1"
set charset = "//TRANSLIT"
set send_charset="us-ascii:utf-8"
in my muttrc and:
LC_COLLATE=C
LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8
in my environment.

Cheers,
