Default Transaction problems

Hello,

I have some questions about transactions. Can anyone tell
me?
1) When transaction begin using 'begintrans', does it lock
the field only after it write the data to that field?

2) When the field is locked by transaction, can I read the
data field? Or, I just cannot write but can read? Or, It
depends on database setting ?

3) For doing shared or exclusive lock, can i do it
Database level or programming level ? How can I do it and
which is better ?

4) What syntax VB set the timeout for the 'begintrans'
after it lock the field?

5) Concurrent control can be implemented by Database level
or not ? Or, I need to handle it in Programming Level?

Thank you
David C
