Deleting mails on the ISP server
Esteemed anti-spam Gurus :-)
I have been looking at Pegasus v 4.2 with the hope of setting up a filter
based on an addressbook or a distribution list. As usual Peg's Help file
falls very short. I created a distrib list but had to stop there. It's not
clear to me
whether the /MATCH *@domain.com accepts or doesn't mails from that domain.
I'm also not clear on the filter setting for blocking all "From:" email
addresses that are
not on the distr list. I did searches and came up with a big bunch of hits
but didn't
get the answers I needed.
I just discovered that Peg can do SS deletes. Does anyone have a tutorial or
guide to the settings. Just to accept and dnload the mails from members of a
list
or addressbook and delete the rest.
At this point I thought of Mailwasher, which I am using (v 2.0.14 beta) and
works very well but it's very tedious to click the little boxes for 40 crap
mails. If I could delete all the non-Friends mail with one button, that
would be great and much more convenient than downloading all the mails into
Pegasus. Mailwasher Pro claims to have all sorts of sophisticated filter
processes, which are then updated for an annual fee. However, this seems to
me to be a lost cause because of the infinitely variable ways the spammers
can use. Killing all mail that doesn't come from addresses on the Friends
list looks like the best bet to me. However, the version I have allows only
about 10 names on the list.
I also tried twice to take them up on the offer of an upgrade to the pro
for $20 but when I tried it would not accept $US. Has the hatred gone this
far?
Anyone know if the pro has the button I mentioned above - that deletes all
non-friends mail with one click?
Comments appreciated.
Thanks.

What you're looking for is the filtering options in Pegasus Mail.
While there isn't specifically a "White List" option, which is what
you describe, you can get the same effect (almost) using the
following:
1. Make notes of each of the email addresses to accept
2. Set up a filter rule for each one, with the action being "Exit this
rule Set"
3. Set up a final filter rule which deletes all messages.
( "Add Rule / Always Triggers" )
This should let you keep the addresses you wish to accept, yet delete
all the rest.
See the help in Pegasus Mail - "Mail Filtering Rules" for more info.
Hope this helps,
Anthony Albert

Actually, there is, it's just not named "White List".
Put the "good" addresses into an PM distribution list, then use the "List
Scan" rule, so you have something like this:
If ListScan "@WHITE.PML" Exit

Sorry Jeff, I had no idea.
I have posted many times to this list and nobody brought this up. Misc
suggests "everything" to me. Why isn't the name:
comp.mail.pegasus.no.windows
if it is what you say?

Re: Deleting mails on the ISP server
Thanks Jeff and Anthony for the suggestions.
I already have the distribution list. Is it automatically put into the White
list?
So I need to make a SS pop3 rule text file with something like:
1 If ListScan "@WHITELIST.PML" Download ""
2 What rule to delete the remaining emails?
3 Always Exit ""
TIA

You'd have to ask the people who put the newsgroup charters together.
You are free to try to have comp.mail.pegasus.no.windows created.

Re: Deleting mails on the ISP server
More....
I managed to set up a pop3 rule, in the pop3 editor, to dnload emails
from names on the distribution list.
I guess that leaves the rest on the mail server. For now I can use
Mailwasher to delete the crap but I am looking for a rule that will delete
the rest. There is no very obvious rule for that. There is one: Edit a
Standard Header Rule and I could set it to Delete and not mark any boxes.
Would the first rule be applied and then the other mails deleted with this
one?

Jeff - you're a pathetic pedantic wanker! There is no law against
asking questions in this group at all. There just happens to be another
group which is a subset of this one, referring to windows versions.
That's all.. It ain't the end of the world or civilization as we know
it...
Many questions are asked in here about Mercury - but that's
not in the group name either. It's "miscellaneous" - and that's what it
means.
Get a life!

Re: Deleting mails on the ISP server
More............
Peg version 4.2c.
The distribution list I made was in the format:
"Jon Dough" <jdoe@dough.com>
<:HarryDough@nodough.com>
etc
and it was named LIST4789.PML. This was edited with the Pop3 editor
to download mail from members of the list. The rule type was List scan, the
Trigger condition was @LIST4789.PML and the Action was download. Then I
closed
and re-opened Peg to, hopefully, initialize the filter.
Then I looked at the mail on the mail server with Mailwasher and saw one
email
from a list member and 10 that were not. ALL mails were downloaded by Peg.
Now what?
A few days ago I used that BCC faciliity again. I remembered that a button
had to be checked to hide the BCC names (How wierd to have to do this!). I
checked that button and then closed and re-opened Peg. I sent the email with
about 20 BCCs. One recipient used his reply button and, guess what, there
was the complete list of the BCCs!!! BUG, BUG, BUG!!!
Help appreciated. I'm getting close to using Earthlink's spam blocker.
Thanks
