Pop3 client deleting messages from server

  1. Default Pop3 client deleting messages from server

    Hi all,
I just installed Mercury/32 to give it a try.
All went fine and I created a mailbox on my ISP to test message flow.
I got a problem: when the Pop3 Client gets new messages from the ISP, it
    deletes the downloaded messages.
I rely on the fact that it could leave them untouched on the server.
At least I didn't notice any place to tell not to delete anyway.

    Any help ?

    Best regards

That setting, to leave messages on the server, is on the POP3 client.
Assuming that you're using Pegasus Mail, the setting is under:

    Tools / Internet Options / Receiving (POP3) / Edit

I can't find that option in the setup of POP3 distributing client or
    in the help.

A web search comes up with comments like " Mercury/32 doesn't have any
    mechanism to
determine whether the messages have been downloaded before or not
so all mail on the POP3 host is downloaded each time. If the
messages are not deleted they will be downloaded each time MercuryD
    connects to the host."

    Phil,
thanks for the prompt answer. Now I understand.
Sadly, this fact prevents the use of Mercury in my case.
I would retain for, say, a week, all messages on the ISP server, either
for backup, either for allowing traveling employees to read their mail
even if it has been already downloaded by Mercury. :-(

If the Pop3 Client could compare the list of already downloaded email
against the LIST given back from the ISP server, it could also very well
    download only new messages.

At least, this is the way other email server realize the trick.
And then, if required, they can delete all messages older than 7 days.

    Thanks so much indeed

    Anthony,
    thanks for your reply.
This means that I would be forced to "publish" my Mercury server in the
Internet, if I would give access also to traveling employees.

If all downloaded email could stay on the ISP server for a week, the
Mercury server could remain hidden behind my firewall.. :-)

    Best regards

Ah, I misunderstood the question. You're using Mercury, AS a POP3
client, to fetch messages. I'm afraid I have no experience with using
    Mercury in that mode...

I believe it's a case of: "When your only tool is a hammer... every
    problem looks like a nail."

    Whoops,
