Switch from single user to multi-user
Apologies if there is a how-to in some obvious place - please direct me
to it. I have installed PMail 4.31 on a new PC by copying the entire
PMail folder from another PC (also running 4.31, as single user), then
running the install as an update. All is fine. Now I wish to convert
the new single-user installation to support a second user, but I can't
find how to do it either from within PMail, or by re-running the
install, or by using PConfig.
I'm quite willing to scrap the PMail directory and run a clean install
- that would presumably give me the option to have multiple users - but
I don't want to have to recreate signatures, distr'n lists, address
books, identities and IMAP settings. In fact, I positively want them
to be identical to the installation on the other PC in order to
facilitate parallel updating in the future.
Any pointers gratefully received.

May be this http://www.pmail.com/faqs/faqs_wsi.htm might help.

Re: Switch from single user to multi-user
Thank you, Bernard - should have (re)found that FAQ myself. Problem
solved. Incidentally, I also tried the following hint from a recent
thread (Re: Peg 4.3 on Win XP, 08 Jan 2006):
> you can create a new environment variable whose name is
> PMUSER with the value %username%. Doing that you won't be prompt anymore

I had expected to enter PMUSER as a system variable, but the variable
didn't get replaced by the appropriate value, staying as literal
"%USERNAME%" instead, for me as admin user, anyway. Substitution did
seem to work if it was a user variable. Is that correct? Does that
mean that it will have to be entered separately for other users?
Thanks for help, as always.

It happens that David formulated :

You're welcome. Forget to look also at times at the FAQ.
Glad you progressed in the problem solving.

This is because the %USERNAME% environment variable upon which the %
PMUSER% environment variable depends, isn't initialized with a value
until the user authenticates to Windows. User environment variables are
set when the user logs in, whereas system environment variables are set
when the system boots. You can't have a system environment variable that
is dependent upon the value of a user environment variable.
