| Hi all, I'm a new at this console email thing. Set up Gmail IMAP on alpine v1.0, it's working great, 'cept for a few annoyances. I can't seem to delete my emails permenantly. They're sent to [Gmail]/ All Mail. I tried searching through the archives, but can't find anything related. Can alpine send the 'deleted' emails to [Gmail]/ Trash when it expunges them? best, edge |

| Nancy's Guide is as usual rather excellent. Gmail's system is a bit strange - "d" deletes from current view but leaves the message in All Mail. To delete, save the file to the Trash folder http://www.ii.com/internet/messaging/pine/pc/#gmailIMAP N. I don't understand why Gmail wants to be so special about managing the messages from an application via IMAP. Also when you delete a message in INBOX, it gets immediately expunged when you refresh that INBOX (same things happens with webmail though), which I find annoying too. The problem is that when you delete a message in your INBOX from alpine (or another mail app I guess), that message formally disappears from your INBOX, but it is not put In the [Google Mail]/Bin folder and it does not disappear from [Google Mail]/All Mail (unlike what happens within webmail). Why???! Why did google choose to have these nonstandard IMAP behaviours? (see <http://www.ii.com/internet/ messaging/pine/pc/#gmailIMAP>) I tried to setup a filtering rule based on <http://groups.google.com/ group/comp.mail.pine/browse_thread/thread/ 74a70d9289a68379/065f2de464e4829a?lnk=gst&q=Trash +alpine#065f2de464e4829a> that would move any deleted message to the [Google Mail]/Bin folder upon expungeing, but while this rule works fine if the deleted message is in an INBOX from another email account (not a gmail one), it fails with alpine when the message is deleted in the gmail INBOX!!? I was also thinking that a (poor) workaround would be to change your INBOX path to the [Google Mail]/All Mail path, so that deleted messages there are really deleted, but messages in that folder deleted from alpine are not considered so for google and you cannot expunge them (although the 'deleted' flag appears in alpine, nothing changes on webmail). Anybody has an idea? These annoyances just prevent me from using google mail (I like alpine more than google...) armando |

Then when you 'deleted' a mail, it would get moved to a specified mailbox (trash) instead of the goofy gmail behavior. As it is, if I want to delete messages, I have to type 's [ tab T tab'. |
