getting only new mail or marking all messages as read : Pine
This is a discussion on getting only new mail or marking all messages as read within the Pine forums in Other Technologies category; So I'm using gmail with alipine. I've got it set up correctly however when I log in in downloads all my messages from my gmail account and marks them as new messages. Is there a way I can only download new messages from gmail or if not a way I can mark all messages in my inbox as read.. or do both? Sincerely, Chris Dancy...

I dont have any such problem, and I use IMAP from apline. But if you want to mark all messages as read, all you need is to select all messages and Apply Flag and unmark New. I think what he is doing is not eliminating the messages from his gmail account and the retrieved messages there are not being marked as read. thus each time he downloads the same bunch of messages and each time erases them from his inbox. This is a problem with gmail and POP/IMAP not with alpine. >HTH, >Supreet. >> >> Sincerely, >> Chris Dancy >> |

Is there a way that when alpine downloads the new messages, it will mark the messages in email as read as well. Not leave them as unread. |

| I think you should use IMAP with gmail. POP works by connecting once to the mail server and downloading all your mail, all of which are marked unread, and then dsiconnects from teh server. Each time you connect using POP, this process happens. You are not actually accessing your gmail inbox, but just a copy of it. IMAP is more interactive. It maintains a live client-server connection and you actually operate on your gmail inbox. If you have a very slow internet connection this could be a problem, as you can get those " Break Connection to server ?" messages. I think IMAP can do pretty much everything POP can do, including bulk message download. It can handle MIME type messages (though I am not sure how POP does). As for configuration, you will get plenty of help online on U-Wash's Pine page. HTH, Supreet. On Thu, 6 Nov 2008, christoforever@gmail.com wrote: >>>>> So I'm using gmail with alipine. I have switched over to imap and in my experience thus far it is a better choice. I no longer have to worry about downloading them all every time. Also it checks it off in my gmail inbox as having been read, so thats a bonus. Anyway Thanks for the help, for all those that gave their input. Sincerely, Chris Dancy |
