ooDialog examples?

  1. Default ooDialog examples?

Are there any examples of very simple ooRexx scripts using ooDialog?

A "Hello, World" script with the absolute minimum of code where the
message is displayed in various types of GUI objects would be
immensely helpful is getting started, especially for people who
    already know Classic Rexx.

I'm not sure where you would find the resource that you're looking
    for. This might help though.

In the samples\oodialog folder of your installation is a file called
GUI_Template.rex which allows you to build simple oodialog
applications mainly by using the delete key.

Perfect. I missed that folder. Thanks.

I would suggest that those examples also be made available somewhere
on the ooRexx web site. Maybe crate a new "Samples" entry under the
Project Links list on the left margin.

It could include instructions for submitting samples to add to the
collection. Heck, I might even submit some once I get this thing
    figured out.

If we want Rexx to survive, we need to make it as easy as possible (a)
see the power of what it can do and (b) get up to speed.

I think the way to request changes to the website would be to submit
an RFE Tracker at the ooRexx sourceforge site
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/oorexx/

You could also submit new sample scripts there - I'm sure they would
    be welcomed.

As Jon pointed out, indirectly, there are a number of ooDialog samples
shipped as part of the installation package. There are probably more
ooDialog samples than there are samples for any other aspect of
ooRexx. I guess we need some better way to point out to people that
those samples are available when they install ooRexx.

    A couple of points here.

    * I've wanted to redo the ooDialog samples for awhile. Like
everything else it is a matter of time.

    * There are currently samples that went with the IBM Object Rexx
OODIALOG tutorial. That tutorial was focused around the Resource
Workshop and since the Workshop could not be made available, the
documentation for the tutorial was dropped. I've wanted to write a
new tutorial and adjust the samples to go with that tutorial.

    * The ooRexx project has an area of source code called the incubator.
In there is the start of some more ooDialog samples. SourceForge has
added a nice feature to the code repositories which allows you to
download portions of the repository directly from a web browse.

I've started a section in the incubator for ooDialog samples. The
idea was that samples could be added there to supplement what comes
with the ooRexx package. There are not many there now, but it is an
    added resource.

    A link to it is:

    http://oorexx.svn.sourceforge.net/vi...ples/ooDialog/

When you download something, it is in gzipped tar format, so on
Windows you would need to get a gzip and tar program. There are a
number of them available. I just tried this feature and it works
    well:

    E:\>dir ListView.tar.gz
Volume in drive E is Blackfoot
    Volume Serial Number is 9C3D-6D2A

    Directory of E:\

    09/28/2008 08:05 AM 11,925 ListView.tar.gz
    1 File(s) 11,925 bytes
    0 Dir(s) 13,691,858,944 bytes free

    E:\>gzip -d ListView.tar.gz

    E:\>tar -xvf ListView.tar
    ListView/
    ListView/ListViewEx.dll
    ListView/ListViewEx.rc
    ListView/ListViewEx.readMe
    ListView/ListViewEx.rex
    ListView/resource.h

    E:\>

    * As Jon pointed out, you could open a RFE through Tracker and
request a specific type of example. If you do, I'll try to write an
example for your request and add it to the incubator. Or Jon might
    write one.

If I had a specific idea of what people would like to see, it would be
easier to write an example. In the past, it has been a little hazy,
just a vague I'd like examples.

    * If you write an example, or examples, you can contribute them to the
ooRexx project by opening a Patch in the tracker system with the
    example(s).

We are extremely interested in getting more people involved in
contributing to the project and any contribution would be welcome.
I'd be very happy to see you submit examples. A link to the Patch
    part of Tracker:

    https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?ati...01&func=browse

    * In addition, I've posted a number of simple examples to this group
when people asked about something specific in ooDialog. If / when you
have something you don't understand or would like an example on, then
    just ask.

Who's looking then? Perhaps about 99.99% of the ooRexx-community met
Rexx in the past, typically using an ancient IBM/mainframe OS. To the
rest of the world it's just Yet Another Language not shipped with their
OS. Not to mention OOP isn't "easy", nor the question if OOP matches a
glorified *.BAT-language (history learned the typical Rexx app is an
INSTALL.CMD, not a fancy app with an innovative UI). Great show, no
audience. Not counting family members of the performers, that is.

    > of what it can do and (b) get up to speed.

O well, it actually may be an advantage for many current ooRexx-users
that it's a small world. They probably honor every slightly reasonable
request, so that shouldn't stop "improvements". I don't think there's
any need to mention gained power nor speed to advocate changes. It's
a small world being pleased. Too bad.
