| Hi, I am trying to find an easy way to manager user access to certain web parts, but my groups I created in active directory do not show up when I try to browse or type them in when I am selecting the target audiences. I thought MOSS 2007 would easily pickup the security groups created in active directory to be used globally on our sharepoint site. is there something I'm missing? |

| Hi Cy, Yes you should be able to target web parts with AD audiences. Which web part are you using? When selecting the modify web part drop down under 'Advanced' it should have a section 'Target Audiences'. Select the 'Browse' book and not 'Check Names' button. Then make sure you select 'Distribution/ Security Groups' from the drop down. | Thanks for response, yes i selected the distribution/security groups option and the only items in that liste were sites that i created there were no ad groups listed at all only sites. could this be some sort of configuration issue? | Hi Cy, With the distribution/security groups drop down list selected, enter the name of the AD group you created in the text box next to the drop down and click on the magifying glass... Does the group appear? Have you been able to target on a single person? | Hi Euan, no i cannot target a single person, i don't think it even searches the active directory at all. But when i add new users to the site it searches the active directory without a problem. | I have the same problem. When I open the Select Audiences dialog and change the Find selector to "Distribution/Security Groups" no groups are found. I have the same problem when I try to build an Audience in the SSP based on an AD Group. Do I first need to import the groups from AD using "User Profiles and Properties" in the SSP? This doesn't seem intuitive since the profile import focuses on users and not groups. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks- -Mark |

| Hi Mark, from your post I tried the importing in the SSP and low and behold I have my security groups when I click on browse from the target audiences tab. Thanks for the tip it works now. You would think that it would be automatic but apparently not. "Mark" wrote: > I have the same problem. | I have the exact same problem now. Did you ever resolve this one, and if so, can you remember exactly what you did? Thanks |

It looks as if Sharepoint is using the Fulltext catalog to index users and groups as opposed to hitting active directory every time. Once a crawl of active directory has finished your newly added AD user or group should show up in audiences. |
