Crawl rules : Sharepoint
This is a discussion on Crawl rules within the Sharepoint forums in Microsoft Tools category; We run MOSS2007 on one server and have no huge farm or anything. The same server is the index server. Question is, do I really need to setup crawl rules and what is the actual difference between the content sources and the crawl rules. I understand the exclude part. But if i don't setup an include rule wouldn't everything be indexed by default then. ???...

| Thanks for your reply. I have been screwing around to much now so I need to clear and reset my index tonight as it's not picking up everything and i think its confused. Now i have taken out all rules and will just reindex (after clearing and disabling alerts) the whole server. That should do it i think. That is sort of the purpose of the portal and non-portal content sources. But if you do a content source for an external website, or a server share, or other source like a blog, then you need an inclusion rule to get the folders you want, and exclusion rules to refuse to index specific folders or document types. Getting all these parameters to work together properly is quite tricky. You may want to check out the following blog entries, on how to index a dot-Text blog: Crawling a dotText blog—Part 2 - Outlook by the sound http://msmvps.com/blogs/obts/archive.../20/71832.aspx - 28 KB Crawling a dotText blog--Part 5 - Outlook by the sound http://msmvps.com/blogs/obts/archive.../21/72069.aspx - 31 KB Crawling a dotText blog--Part 4 - Outlook by the sound http://msmvps.com/blogs/obts/archive.../21/72014.aspx - 32 KB How to crawl a dotText blog -- Part 1 - Outlook by the sound http://msmvps.com/blogs/obts/archive.../19/71690.aspx - 34 KB Crawling a dotText blog--Part 3 - Outlook by the sound http://msmvps.com/blogs/obts/archive.../21/72013.aspx - 27 KB How to Crawl a Community Server Blog - Outlook by the sound http://msmvps.com/blogs/obts/archive...21/441891.aspx - 27 KB Indexes, Content Sources, Source Groups, Search Scopes… Oh My! - The SharePoint Farmer's Almanac http://msmvps.com/blogs/shane/archiv.../08/74931.aspx - 31 KB -- Hollis Paul Mukilteo, WA USA |
