This is a discussion on Re: Installing pdf ifilter on a MOSS large server farm within the Sharepoint forums in Microsoft Tools category; KSachit, the pdf ifilter should only be installed on the sharepoint servers. KSachit, the pdf ifilter should only be installed on the sharepoint servers.
Here is some information about that:

adobe ifilter 6

(this one refers to trying to get it to index lots of already existing pdfs

Adobe/MS don't have a 64 bit pdf ifilter (but it doesn't matter if you're
sharepoint isn't running 64 bit, however...), but you can get the one by

Nowhere that I have ever heard of do you need to install it on the SQL
cluster.

To summarize: I installed pdf IFilter v6.o on the index server. (My index
server was 32-bit). Things worked fine!
