Can I restore a MOSS 2007 Configuration Database to another server
Can I restore a Sharepoint 2007 Configuration Database to another server ( as
part of migration or disaster recovery ). I’ve be reading contradicting
statements from Microsoft about this. Obviously they don’t want you to do it
( not do it according to a white paper - Data protection and recovery for
Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 in small to medium-sized deployments.
)
If I am to do that which server comonents ( names , ips ,etc ) need to be
the same on the new database server ?
On the other hand database mirroring is a suggested redundancy configuration
( from http://blogs.msdn.com/joelo/ ) . This does involve running the
configuration DB on a secondary server
Any conclusion ?

SG,
If you are going to create a new farm (like temp farm for migration
purposes) i'd not recommend you to back-up and restore configuration database
on the server of the new farm. Basically config database is the heart of your
farm. In this case i'd recommend you to create/configure the new farm
(Servers) and then attach the specific content databases. Now you've the
back-up enviornment.
Most of the times Mirroring is preferred for content databases. It
does not bring much value to mirror the configuration databases.
