on Sharepoint site how do I add a tab on the main page? - Sharepoint

It's easy (assuming you're talking about the top link bar).

Click on the Site Actions menu, click on Site Settings. On the site
settings page, click on the Top link bar link. On the Top Link Bar page,
click New Link to create a new link and that will make a tab on the top of
the main page...

If it's a V2 product then you can add tabs by using FP 2003, Jane.
(Please in future always write which SharePoint product you are asking
about)

you can also try editing the home page with the sharepoint designer. It also helps you to change the look and feel of the home page.
