High availability on a farm
Hi,
I need to create a highly-available MOSS 2007 farm.
I'd like to use the following topology:
- Clustered SQL back end
- Load balanced front end web servers
- 2 App servers.
As I understand the documentation, I should put seach on one app
server and excel services on the other.
The problem with this is that then I have single points of failure on
my app boxes.
Is there a way to have everything on one app server and have it
failover to the other if something goes wrong?
Thanks in advance.

Re: High availability on a farm
There is little impact if search fails, people can still operate - they just
cannot search. Ask yourself the question if Excel Services fail how does it
impact your business - can they still operate say 90% business as usual and
if so then the impact of it failing is small (or large conversly).
Techncially, both services can fail as they are usually seen as
non-critical - like Index - and most functions of MOSS are not impacted.
Whats stopping you having search and excel on both app servers - have you
measured your throughput expectations and scaled accordingly? Also, under
failure scenario - whats stopping you activating the services on WFE servers
as part of your failure scenario.
