Cannot add web parts from clients - Sharepoint

Follow-up: the error depends on how I access the sharepoint server.
If I access it by IP address, the error occurs. If I access it by its
fully-qualified host name (http://tcas03.xxx.net/default.aspx), the
error occurs. If I access it by its netbios name (http://tcas03/
default.aspx), the error does not occur.

It sure seems to be an authentication issue but I still can't nail
down what it is. In the trace log I get this:

Failed to add webpart http%253A%252F%252Ftcas03%252F%255Fcatalogs
%252Fwp%252FMSImage%252Edwp;Image%2520Web%2520Part. Exception
System.ArgumentException: Value does not fall within the expected
range. at
