Cannot edit lists in Datasheet view
We are using SharePoint Services 2.0, we are up to date on all our service
packs. Whenever someone tries to modify a list using the "Edit in Datasheet"
button, the screen just flashes and we get the following error message:
The list is displayed in Standard view. It cannot be displayed in Datasheet
view for one or more of the following reasons: A datasheet component
compatible with Windows SharePoint Services is not installed, your browser
does not support ActiveX controls, or support for ActiveX controls is
disabled.
Maybe we are missing something.... we tried on both IE 6 & 7. We are using
WinXP.

Re: Cannot edit lists in Datasheet view
There are various possibillities
a) doesn't apply to you (using a non-IE browser) because you are using
IE 6 or 7.
b) You don't have Office 2003 (at least) on the client.
c) you have a combination of Office 2003 level apps and Office 2007
level apps on the client and security updates are causing havoc.
There are more reasons but they are the ones to look at first. (Note
Office XXX "level" so FP 2003 would be Office 2003 level; SPD 2007
Office 2007 level for instance.

What would other causes of this be? I am suddenly also getting this
error using IE 6. All office components are Office 2003. Any help or
things to look into would be a grea assistance.
Thanks!

Most likely Office Web Components are disabled by Office 2003. Enable
them by deleting 65BCBEE4-7728-41A0-97BE-14E1CAE36AAE from the
registry on client's machine. For detailed information, read below:

RE: Cannot edit lists in Datasheet view
I get this issue and got told it's because of Visio2007 installed on the PC.
WSS 3 with Office 2003 and Visio2007 seems to give issues. Uninstall of
Vision2007 might solve it I got told but that's not an option for me.

Re: Cannot edit lists in Datasheet view
The same applies to the combination of any Office 2003 *level*
product(s) and any Office 2007 level products on the same client.
Visio 2007 is an Office 2007 level product in this definition.
I find the only way to avoid this kind of problems completely is to have
separate machines - one with only Office 2007 level products and the
other with only Office 2003 level products.

Re: Cannot edit lists in Datasheet view
If you have a mix of Office 2003 and Office 2007 applications (example, Office 2003 suite, but SharePoint Designer 2007), you may find that you get various errors after recieving MS Office updates.
Problems you will see include Datasheet view not working, browser crashing when attempting to open on office documents, browser crashing when attempting to follow a link to another SharePoint site, etc.
I have been able to resolve most Office incompatibility issues by simply running MS Office Diagnostics.
I have found this works better than running Detect and Repair from an Office 2003 application.
Diagnostics takes several minutes to run but ususlly fixes the issues.
Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office Tools > Microsoft Office Diagnostics

Re: Cannot edit lists in Datasheet view
I have so far had 3 computers with this same error. All three are running Windows Vista, with Office 2003 sp3. The only thing we have having anything to do with Office 2007 is the compatiblity pack.
We are also running SharePoint 2003.

Re: Cannot edit lists in Datasheet view
Using Microsoft Sharepoint APIs we can easily Add, Update and Delete list items programmatically. Provided below is a code snippet in C# .Net demonstrating all the three operations.
using (SPSite oSPsite = new SPSite("http://website url/"))
{
using (SPWeb oSPWeb = oSPsite.OpenWeb())
{
oSPWeb.AllowUnsafeUpdates = true;
// Fetch the List
SPList list = oSPWeb.Lists["MyList"];
//Add a new item in the List
SPListItem itemToAdd = list.Items.Add();
itemToAdd["Title"] = "Test Title";
itemToAdd["Description"] = "Test Description";
itemToAdd.Update();
// Get the Item ID
listItemId = itemToAdd.ID;
