Sharepoint to replace network shared drives? : Sharepoint
This is a discussion on Sharepoint to replace network shared drives? within the Sharepoint forums in Microsoft Tools category; Should you replace network shares with MOSS? My gut feeling is no, that SQL Server storage is more expensive and complicated than network storage, and the basic collaborative nature of Sharepoint probably doesn't support long term historical archives of data. Throw in some security issues and backup and restore issues, and I think there is a place for network drives. Thoughts?...

| You can index the files in your shares using SharePoint. The files will remain in the drives but users will be able to search them in SharePoint. Rest, it depends on the actual requirements why you would like to use SharePoint. SharePoint has its own advantages too. http://sharepointblogs.com/ssa "Project****yst" wrote: > Should you replace network shares with MOSS? > > My gut feeling is no, that SQL Server storage is more expensive and > complicated than network storage, and the basic collaborative nature of > Sharepoint probably doesn't support long term historical archives of data. > Throw in some security issues and backup and restore issues, and I think > there is a place for network drives. > > Thoughts? |

| If what I am hearing from MSFT is right. file shares will eventually be replaced by sharepoint. but for now just crawl the file shares as needed. They then make (from a lack of real SharePoint experience I presume) the faulty conclusion that this is a good idea and that it means you can get rid of the file system for storage.
