Sharepoint to replace network shared drives? : Sharepoint

This is a discussion on Sharepoint to replace network shared drives? within the Sharepoint forums in Microsoft Tools category; Should you replace network shares with MOSS? My gut feeling is no, that SQL Server storage is more expensive and complicated than network storage, and the basic collaborative nature of Sharepoint probably doesn't support long term historical archives of data. Throw in some security issues and backup and restore issues, and I think there is a place for network drives. Thoughts?...

Should you replace network shares with MOSS?

You can index the files in your shares using SharePoint. The files will
remain in the drives but users will be able to search them in SharePoint.
Rest, it depends on the actual requirements why you would like to use
SharePoint. SharePoint has its own advantages too.

If what I am hearing from MSFT is right. file shares will eventually be
replaced by sharepoint. but for now just crawl the file shares as needed.

The people in Microsoft that say this are not people from the SharePoint
team (who do *not* recommend replacing the file system with SharePoint)
but are people who have read some SharePoint documentation and seen that
you *can* have 2000 folders each containing 2000 documents.

They then make (from a lack of real SharePoint experience I presume) the
faulty conclusion that this is a good idea and that it means you can get
rid of the file system for storage.
