| One of our web applications is called "Sharepoint (80)". Unfortunately Symantec's BackupExec Sharepoint Agent can't handle the brackets in the name. Is there any way to rename the web application? I had hoped I can use stsadm.exe -o renameweb -url <url> -newname <new subsite name>, but it does not work for the web application name. Thanks. |

| Hi, The command you are trying to execute is not going to rename the webapplication but the site collection directly. There is no way to "rename" a web application within Sharepoint. The workaround that i can suggest you is to : 1-Remove the webapplication from IIS using "remove sharepoint from IIS website" in "application managment" 2-Extend the Webapplication in IIS again using "create or extend a webapplication" in "application managment" 3-Rename the "Website description" I am not sure if it is the result that you are looking for, but it's the only way that i have in mind to rename the webapp. Hope that helps Regards, Etienne. | Hi, You could also use backup and restore. Create simply a new application, then restore the site collections and its sub-sites into that. This way your old site and application will be still available should anything go wrong.
