using AD OU as a department

This is a discussion on using AD OU as a department within the Sharepoint forums in Microsoft Tools category; Hi im quite new to sharepoint. we have MOSS 2007 installed and are upgrading from 2003 portal server (but doing it all fresh). Im trying to build an employee directory. In our Active Directory we already have all our employees organised by department. is there a way to import that into the profile in Sharepoint? also once that is done, the requirement is to browse by department and then see a list of profiles of people in that department.... is this out of the box or will someone be doing some programming? thanks Laurence....

I have not found a way.

We use OU's for office location and I wanted to put that in a profile field.
It does allow you to select "ou" as a field to import, but nothing gets
imported.

I had to write a program that runs every night that gets each user's OU
value and puts it in a field in their profile.

You mean import the structure of your AD users into Sharepoint?

It all depends what do you want to achieve actually...You can build your
site collection structure in order to mirror all departments you have in AD,
import all user profiles, assign access accordingly, create a web part
(out-of-box) that will allow to see all users in a certain site
collection/site.
If your user accounts are in different OU's, make sure that account used for
import have access to that OU's (assign through security tab)
