  1. Default Recommended Reference Materials

    Hi,

I am just starting to look at SharePoint for document management and to
    "host" web-based applications.

    1. Is this a good environment to host web-based applications?
    2. If so, can you recommend a development tool (is Visual Studio the best
choice), reference material to learn said development tool (I have a
programming background, most recently in VBA/Access), and database (would
    that be SQL Server 2005?)?

Finally, if you have any other recommended reading or training materials to
get up to speed on SharePoint, I welcome that feedback.

    Thanks,

    Hi David,
I think you should use dev NG for this type of questions (ex.:
    microsoft.public.sharepoint.portalserver.development)

Anyway if you look for imformation on MOSS 2007 I do recommend thia link:

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc303422.aspx

By typing "moss (and) Web-Based Applications" in search box you will get a
lot of article on this subject.

I hope you'll find there some answers.

I have a full list of SharePoint 2007 books and DVD training courses here.

    http://wss.asaris.de/sites/walsh/Lis...V%20Books.aspx

The development books are concentrated in section B.

Otherwise check out the web casts and labs listed here

    http://wss.asaris.de/sites/walsh/Lis.../AllItems.aspx

on the first page there's for instance a recent Hands-On lab for
developing applications on WSS 3.0 listed.

    Thanks for the links Mike.

Do you think this is a good environment to host web based apps, and do you
    have a preferred dev environment?

Do you think this is a good environment to host web based apps, and do you
    have a preferred dev environment?

    Thanks.
