Re: Need Objective questions on testing
Hi Harish,
I find it useful to approach hiring as a testing problem. If our goal
as a tester of software is to investigate the product in order to
reveal quality (value to some person) related information, then we can
apply the same principles to hiring.
Who will the testers provide value to? What are the needs of those
people? How might we find out if a candidate has the necessary
attributes to meet (or learn how to meet) those needs? Consider what
you want to learn about the candidates. Consider what attributes would
indicate someone who is likely to make a good tester. Design questions
which reveal something about those attributes.
I'm doubtful that the ability to pass an exam is something that is
usually a good predictor of testing aptitude, but I don't know your
requirements.
By all means ask others for their questions, but my experience is that
only *you* can know what kind of people are most likely to succeed at
the work you need to do. Get together with a few colleagues, and talk
about what makes a good tester. Design behavioural or hypothetical
scenarios that put people into the situations you would like them to be
able to handle. Ask the candidate what kinds of questions they would
ask (or have asked) in order to solve particular kinds of problems.
You will learn a lot by trying to come up with questions.
You *are* going to make hiring mistakes. If you haven't hired before,
you are unlikely to get it right the first time. Learn from the
experience. Add questions and tests that prevent hiring mistakes, and
remove questions and tests that prove to be less valuable. It's very
much like testing, really
Good general advice on hiring can be found on Cem Kaner's site. It
helped me a great deal, and it covers much of the advice I would give
you, but with many more years of experience behind it -

Johanna Rothman has a lot of useful advice on creating behavioural
questions -
