Hi, My name is Burim and I am student majoring in cs in the US. I am looking for some ideas on a project for me to do over the summer. I do not have any preferences as to what technology to use. My networks profesor has no suggestions for me as he is not very familiar with the technology. I was planning on implementing VNC capabilities for s60 but someone has already ported VNC on symbian, I was also thinking of implementing WI-FI adhoc connectivity but it seems that that is available as well.=20 At this point I am desperate and would greatly appreciate any suggestions o= n some 2-3 month project. I am open to any ideas at this point, something as a follow-up to the 2 projects I mentioned or something completely different, but it must be more of a "infrastructure" like project than just an application like say a game so I can get it approved by=20 my professor. Again I am very open to any suggestions, and I thank you in advance.

Hi Burim, Unfortunately for you, Symbian OS offer a wide range of protocol, from wifi= to bluetooth, from Irda to usb, etc... As a result, many "infrastructure" project like yours have already been imp= lemented for commercial use and are sometimes available with the phone itse= lf. I think that it shouldn't matter, as your advisor should evaluate your skil= ls, not the project result. Therefore, you could reinvent the wheels for le= arning purposes. By "infrastructure", do you mean anything link to a network? Or do you mean= something "professional"? Because the game industry generate more wealth than the movie industry, you= know, I wouldn't be ashamed to code a game. Have a look here: http://www.embisys.com/?page_id=3D10 The possibility are endless ![]() Do something you like and that you will be proud off. Regards, Jean-Noël

You are welcome, Can you post the requirement for your project? How tuff does it needs to be? PS, you also wrote a post in PIPS (Pips IS Posix in Symbian). Do you need to write your code "UNIX style"? Regards, Jean-Noël

Sorry for the double post, I am new to forums and didn't know under which topic to post the question. Anyway, my project needs to be about 3 months of work. But it is also possi= ble for me to continue working on it during the fall semester if its something = much bigger. Orginally, i was planing on porting or implementing VNC or similar function= ality, but it seems that this is already implemented.=20 My profesor, wants to try to connect a phone to a network server to somehow make the phone a thin client and have everything work on the server as a lo= ng term goal, but he doen't exactly know what he wants to do nor is he familliar with the= technolgy. Another idea that I had was to implement ad hock WI-FI functionality as thi= s was on the app wish list in s60.com but that is also implemented. So I guess, I could possibly do some king of follow-up project on the abov= e two and extend their functionality somehow. Or mabye i could do some distributed c= omputing kind of application. So to better answer your question, I can choose to do anything as long as I= can convince my prof that it is enaugh to keep me bussy for 2-3 month and the application has at least some "infrastructure" flavor to it. Again thanks, Burim

| Hi [~burim], Did you take into account what Jo had to say in another posting? I thought = she had a very good idea. If you've still not decided, I can suggest the fo= llowing: 1. A [RDP|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remote_Desktop_Protocol|Remote Deskt= op Protocol] client. There is at least one commercial implementation on Sym= bian OS, but nothing in the open source domain 2. Implement [CIFS|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server_Message_Block|Server= Message Block] on Symbian OS. Won'tit be cool to browse the network neighb= ourhood from your mobile and vice versa? Cheers. |

Hi Max, Your two ideas looks great, but it should be a two month student work... However, it's definitely more "infrastructure" than mine ![]() Jean-Noël

Hi Max, and thanks for joining the discussion.=20 I appreciate you guys taking the time to deal with a newbe like me. Can you tell me more specifically what you had in mind? Browsing the network neighborhood seems like such a common feature in PC's = that I am surprised=20 that it is not implemented already. From reading the wiki article it seems = that the SMB protocol could do a lot of other stuff as well, did you have anything else in mind t= hats not available in phones as well. Also do you have an idea as to what API's are available out there that I co= uld work with on this project that you are suggesting? .. Cheers,=20 Burim p.s Like I mentioned to Jo in a previous post the project should be 2-3 moths o= f work, but if its something interesting I could continue working on it during the = Fall semester as well. So don't let time be a limiting factor.
