Google Code of Summer 2007 & Tcl/Tk
I wonder if Tcl/Tk community is going to apply as a mentoring
organization for Google Summer of Code 2007. In my opinion it is great
opportunity to expose Tcl/Tk to young programming talents among
students.
Personally I would like to mentor some of interns in my company during
summer 2007. In my opinion additional financial compensation form
Google will be very important for their motivations and quality of
their work.
Today I've tried to contact Donal K. Fellows and Jff Hobbs to urge
them to fill the application form at http://code.google.com/soc/org_signup.html,
but I have no reply from them so far. The deadline is 2 hours from now
(Google will no longer accepting applications from mentoring
organizations as of PST - 17:00 on Monday, March 12th (UTC - 00:00 on
Tuesday, March 13th - see
http://groups.google.com/group/googl...ication-how-to).
I've got a question if anybody from Tcl Core Team is going to fill the
GCoS 2007 application?
If not I'm probably going to fill it myself doing that as good as I
can. I would like anybody interested to become backup mentor to send
to me his/her Gmail address to be included on the mentor's list. I've
already created a placeholder page for task proposals at the wiki
http://wiki.tcl.tk/17872.
Awaiting any comments before deadline.

Finally I was contacted by Donal Fellows who encourage me to perceed,
but he wrote that "It's far too late in my day for form filling."
So I've already started filling application form and I belive that I
can complete it ,but I would like somone from Tcl Core Team to assist
me if possible. That's what I have so far.

1. What is your Organization's Name?
Tcl Developer Xchange
2. What is your Organization's Homepage?
http://tcl.tk/
3. Describe your organization.
Tcl Developer Xchange is a primary website for many thousands of
software developers who are already more productive with help from the
Tcl programming language and the Tk graphical user interface toolkit.
The development of the open source Tcl core, including the Tcl
scripting language, the Tk toolkit, the Tcl Developer Exchange Web
site is collectively managed by the The Tcl Core Team (TCT), a group
of Tcl experts. The TCT organizes its activities with Tcl Improvement
Proposals (TIPs)
4. Why is your organization applying to participate in GSoC 2007? What
do you hope to gain by participating?
It is opportunity to expose Tcl/Tk to young programming talents among
students so they can get involved with Tcl/Tk by not only using the
Tcl language but also digging into Tcl internals. Tcl code base is
vary mature and clean so working with it is excellent exercise to
enhance developer skills. There are quite a few improvements that
could be contributed by a motivated student.
5. Did your organization participate in GSoC 2005 or 2006? If so,
please summarize your involvement and the sucesses and failures of
your student projects. (optional)
No
6. If your organization has not previously participated in GSoC, have
you applied in the past? If so, for what year(s)? (optional)
No
7. What license does your project use?
Tcl uses a BSD-style open source license: Tcl/Tk license -
http://www.tcl.tk/software/tcltk/license.html
8. URL for your ideas page
http://wiki.tcl.tk/17872
9. What is the main development mailing list for your organization?
tcl-core{}lists.sourceforge.net.
10. Where is the main IRC channel for your organization?
Freenode (meta-server: irc.freenode.net), #tcl (contains ircbridge,
which bridges Tcler's Chat to IRC). Probably the best area for Tcl-
related chat.
11. Does your organization have an application template you would like
to see students use? If so, please provide it now. (optional)
Students should send us their contact information and resume.
Technical proposal preferably should be in TIP format (TIP stands for
Tcl Improvement Proposal described at http://www.tcl.tk/cgi-bin/tct/tip)
or something similar to it. See TIP #2 for a description of the
editorial process a TIP has to go through and TIP #3 for a description
of their structure and the commands used to write them.
12. Who will be your backup organization administrator? Please enter
their Google Account address. We will email them to confirm, your
organization will not become active until they respond. (optional)
About mentors
1. What criteria did you use to select these individuals as mentors?
Please be as specific as possible.
Our mentors will be self-selected, having an interest in particular
features developed, and an interest/need in providing summer
opportunities for students. They will consult with Tcl Core Team
members and respected Tcl users/developers to help students make good
technical decision and achieve the goals beneficial for the Tcl
community.

Re: Google Code of Summer 2007 & Tcl/Tk
I've successfully submitted application to GCoS 2007 for Tcl Developer
Xchange/Community. Maybe it will be accepted. Now I'm going to edit
proposal page http://wiki.tcl.tk/17872 a little bit.

Today I've got enough of editing http://wiki.tcl.tk/17872 . There is
at least a few rough ideas.
I will try to enhance and explain more deeply my proposals when I will
get to work tomorrow.
Maybe someone else will also write some more or do some refactoring/
editing to existing proposals.

Re: Google Code of Summer 2007 & Tcl/Tk
I have added one project to the Jabber Organization which is a generic
tcl project that has its emphasis on a pseudo tcp channel
implementation built on top of udp. If we had this kind of pseudo tcp
socket implementation it would be much easier to make file sharing
applications. This is a must for p2p applications.
See link for details:

Thanks for taking the time to do this. This is exactly the sort of
'getting the name out there' activity that the core team ought to be
doing to publicize Tcl some. Look at last year's participants... sort
of a "who's who" of open source, with Python, Perl, PHP, Ruby, GCC, and
even Haskell present in terms of languages:

So it looks like the application was rejected. Anyone know why?

I'd reject SoC applications for Tcl or Tk if I worked for Google.
Here are my reasons:
1. Google uses Python.
2. Tcl has been removed from some of the Open Source projects overtime
that it used to be used for. The Linux kernel configuration, the
XFree/X.org setup utility, and more. Note: the replacements are
superior in most ways.
3. The Tcl Core team isn't good about management IMO or planning.
4. The most popular Open Source desktop app that use Tcl/Tk is now
probably aMSN, and I don't even use it. It has bugs, and I've found
kmess to be superior. I think overtime others will find kmess better
too.
5. AOL sponsors some Tcl development, and they are a competitor of
Google.
