While that is true...I would not consider it a "barrier". It would
just take
more time.

I'd go further and say that without a clear use case (like "banging
out basic websites for money") then the effort will likely fail to get
far enough to get traction. It is a sad fact that the hardest stage
for any Open Source project is getting it to the stage when there's a
band-wagon for others to jump on; lots of stuff just never gets there.
Pick that initial target and focus on hitting it. Make it trivial to
"bang out basic websites" and you'll find that the steps after that
become easier.

The funny thing is that 37signals says the same thing in their book:

It's not a particularly deep book, but I am not a particularly great
programmer. So it worked out in the end.
