FWIW flux player has trouble with laptops, VIA chipset and others i
think, but i've found flux studio runs everywhere, (uses opengl
maybe?)

(BTW the view x3d button in studio fires up the player.)

Flux Player runs OK on the laptop, as far as I've used it. It's Studio
that's giving me problems. It doesn't even start with the correct display
and when I start to do anything much it hangs, often so badly that I have
to close down by removing the battery.

it should be very difficult to crash that badly these days, could
point to a problem with your system. you might try updating the opengl
drivers, but first google for know problems with the current opengl
drivers on your system.

BTW if you hold the power button in for 6 secs, that should always
power down, but this and/or removing the battery might cause problems,
always check for an extended period of no disk access before.

I have updated the driver and it seems to have cured the instability.

But things are not right. If I texture a cube, as required in a tutorial
exercise, Flux Studio only shows the top face as textured; the others are
blank. Running the simulator shows no textures on any face. Saving the
model as .wrl and running it directly in Flux Player, the rendering is OK.
There is no problem on my desktop, so I suppose it is another interaction
problem between Flux Studio and the laptop driver that I will have to live
with.
Thanks again for your help.

just a thought, try it with a small, multiple-of-two sized texture,
say 128x128 pixels, might be memory limited.

I think the original test was with a small texture but I tried again with
a 128x128 and with the same result.
