Problem with latest MS patches for msxml4 on Vista

  1. Default Problem with latest MS patches for msxml4 on Vista

    When aplying the latest set of MS patches on Vista, a utility we have has
    started crashing.
    The fix we were looking at is detailed in KB936181.
    Upon applying the patch for this issue, an XML utility we use started
    crashing. Removing the patch resolves the problem.

    In debugging the issue, we have found that the crash is caused by an access
    violation occurring in ExitProcess(...), which we presume is related to
    cleanup of resources related to the msxml library. If we change our code to
    call TerminateProcess instead, the problem also goes away.

    Does anyone know of this issue? Is there another patch forthcoming?

    Hello Jason,
    Thanks for your feedback.

    I have consulted with MSXML product team.
    They are working on a case which is related to security update (KB936181).
    Security patch causing application to crash on Win Vista.

    We have a code snippet to reproduce the issue. Would you please check if
    this is the same issue as yours?

    #include "stdafx.h"

    int APIENTRY _tWinMain(HINSTANCE hInstance,HINSTANCE hPrevInstance,LPTSTR
    lpCmdLine,int nCmdShow)
    {
    ::CoInitialize(0);
    IXMLDOMDocument *pXmlDocument = NULL;
    CLSID clsidDOMDoc;
    ::CLSIDFromString(L"{88d969c0-f192-11d4-a65f-0040963251e5}", &clsidDOMDoc);
    ::CoCreateInstance(clsidDOMDoc, NULL, CLSCTX_ALL, IID_IXMLDOMDocument,
    (void **)&pXmlDocument);
    ::CoUninitialize();
    return 0;
    }

    By the way, do you have a call stack or mini-dump file or a simple repro
    for the issue?
    This will help on ****ysis very much. thanks.

    If you have any more concern, please also let me know. It's my please to
    assist you.

    We have an application similar to Jason.
    Crashes after this Security Update is applied to a Vista Machine.

    Please note, in our case, uninstalling MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB936181) does NOT
    resolve our problem from "Uninstall a Program".

    Uninstalling "MSXML4.0 SP2 (KB936181)" from the "Uninstall a problem" does
    not resolve our problem.
    Our application still crashes.

    Wen,

    We believe we have identified the root cause of our crash, and adding a
    virtual destructor to our interface class wrapper
    seems to resolve our problem. But we would like to know the exact cause of
    the crash to verify that we didn't
    just sweep the actual problem under the rug.

  7. Default RE: Problem with latest MS patches for msxml4 on Vista

    We did submit the crash reports to MS via the automated submission process.
    Is there a way we can get submission ids that we can point you too?

    I also have this info from the crash:
    Problem signature:
    Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
    Application Name: ulload.exe
    Application Version: 10.0.1.3547
    Application Timestamp: 46c2558d
    Fault Module Name: msxml4.dll_unloaded
    Fault Module Version: 0.0.0.0
    Fault Module Timestamp: 4640f473
    Exception Code: c0000005
    Exception Offset: 69b6cc2c
    OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1
    Locale ID: 1033
    Additional Information 1: 4fae
    Additional Information 2: 0d120a9be8870230e377331b1170638c
    Additional Information 3: 1558
    Additional Information 4: 146f6b9e188bfb28206df031fff3a6a5

    Since the crash is in ExitProcess(...), the call stack is all assembler
    frames. Do you actually want me to post this info?

    We have been able to resolved our issue,
    by adding a virtual destructor to one of our Interfaces,
    where the DOM was getting created.

    Hello Jason,
    Thanks for your reply.

    I think it isn't necessary to post the call stack.
    I consulted MSXML product team. Actually, the product team has heard this
    problem from another customer, one week ago.
    (After installing 936181 (MS07-042) on Vista, leaked DomDocument objects
    cause AV.)

    Product team is working on the hotfix. Thus, I couldn't paste the KB ID in
    public.
    I have sent an email to you. Please check your mailbox. If you have any
    more concern or anything unclear, please let me know. It's my pleasure to
    assist you.

    Have a great day,

    Wen Yuan,

    Can you send me more information on the proposed fix,
    I want to make sure that we have properly fixed our problem,
    and not just patched the problem. We were seeing the same
    problem as the code you posted was seeing.

    Thanks.
