SQL Server 2005 Management Studio very slow in starting

  1. Default SQL Server 2005 Management Studio very slow in starting

I am in the process of evaluating SQL Server 2005 (Developer Edition) on a
Windows 2000 SP4 member server in a Windows NT domain with three domain
controllers (not active directory). I have installed both operating system
and SQL server software from scratch and succeeded at the second attempt.
    The hardware is a P4 2GHz, 1Gbyte RAM and a 40Gbyte disk PC.

Why does it take roughly 5 minutes for the Management Studio to start. Task
manager tells me that there is plenty of physical memory available and CPU
usage is low so what is it doing? Network Access?

  2. Default RE: SQL Server 2005 Management Studio very slow in starting

    Hi Ade,

    Welcome to MSDN newsgroup.
From your description, you're suffering slow performance issue when try
using SQL 2005 management studio to connect SQL SERVER 2005 server (on a
    win2k server) , yes?

Based on my experience, due to normal hardware or other performance
limitation, when first time connectd server through management studio, it
could cause serveral seconds to 1 minute's delay, but 5 minutes sounds
really strange... And so far I've only got some existing issue on
connecting 64 bit sqlserver (on 64bit windows server) from 32 bit sql
management studio, I don't thinks this is you case, right?

For your sql 2005 on win2k server, are you connecting it through management
studio form local client or remote client components, are both conditions
suffer such problem? In addition, we can also have a look in the SQL
server's log files and windows server's eventlog to see whether there is
    any clues...

  3. Default RE: SQL Server 2005 Management Studio very slow in starting

Steve, thanks for replying. The 64bit issue does not apply as both server
and tools are 32 bit. I have examined all the event logs and the only two
warning messages relating to SQL Server are to do with the mail has not
starting because I have not set up a profile, and the other is to do with the
agent. I can send the logs if it will help, they look OK to me. I did
enable the named pipe protocol as it is not enabled by default in the
Developers edition. I am running the Management Studio from the console of
the server so I imagine it is a local connection. It is not just the
Management Studio that is slow; the Surface Area Configuration tool also
takes ages to start up. Once started the response is no better, just under
two minutes to get to the Services and Connections window so I can confirm
that I am allowing local and remote connections using both named pipes and
TCP/IP. Is it the hardware spec? Or is it trying to find other SQL Server
2005 servers on LAN. When you start either program, it takes ages before the
    windows are displayed properly.

  4. Default RE: SQL Server 2005 Management Studio very slow in starting

The other thing that occurred to me is that our Firewall does not allow
browsing or access to the Internet from our servers. Could it be trying to
access the Internet? If I try and access the Internet via IE, there is a
very long delay before IE reports an error that it could not open the search
page. Is there a link? If so, how do I stop it trying to access the Internet?

    Hi Ade,

    Thanks for your response.
I think the firewal issue you mentioend seems a bit concerned on this
problem. So your database server can not make any outgoing web
request(through browser)? Is there similiar problem with some other program
or application which need to make outgoing http or network message request?

In addition, since we can use SQL management studio to connect any kind of
the SQL 2005 instances( database, ****ysis service, reporting servcie...),
does the problem occur when accessing any of those instances?

  6. Default RE: SQL Server 2005 Management Studio very slow in starting

The autoupdate service is disabled so I am not aware of any programs trying
to access the internet. Anyway got it working properly by insisting on a
proxy for internet connections and changing the default gateway of the
server, control is returned straight back to IE (and therefore Mgmt Studio).
Also proved it by allowing access to the internet temporarily and there it

    | The autoupdate service is disabled so I am not aware of any programs
    trying
    | to access the internet. Anyway got it working properly by insisting on a
    | proxy for internet connections and changing the default gateway of the
    | server, control is returned straight back to IE (and therefore Mgmt
    Studio).
    | Also proved it by allowing access to the internet temporarily and there
    it
    | was in the firewall log, a connection from the server to a Microsoft IP
    | address. As the correlation b/w the two is so strong, I believe the tool
    is
    | trying to access the internet on start-up and was timing out after about
    5
    | minutes. By reducing the timeout, the tool now starts up almost
    instantly.
